Set just about 30 minutes north of Springfield off of Highway 13 is Bolivar, MO! For a town of roughly 10,000, they pack a great punch when it comes to the awesome things to do there. Bolivar is blessed with close proximity to both Stockton and Pomme de Terre lakes providing numerous opportunities for recreation. Pottery painting, bowling, movie going, and great cuisine are just the beginning on a long list of great places to spend your time here. If Bolivar could be known for something, it would be for the amazing antique shops and flea markets tucked in and around town! People travel miles just to make a stop in Bolivar to hunt for their next treasured collector’s item. A few places on our must see list include Country Classic Antiques (everything you could ever want), Back Road Relics (gently used furniture, home decor and everyday items), ATC Downtown Flea Market (antiques, vintage collectibles and hand crafted items), and many more. Bolivar is a great place to discover some new and used trinkets.
One of the great things about Bolivar is the Not’cho Ordinary Taco Truck! These guys serve some of the best tacos in the Ozarks. Some crowd favorites include the Hawaiian Surf n Turf Taco, BBQ Pork Taco, and the Never Fake Cheesesteak. We know these guys are legit because Not’cho Ordinary won food the “People’s Choice” award at the MO Food Truck Festival back in September 2016! Country Days is a fun festival put on every year by the Downtown Bolivar Association! It’s a fair on the square featuring all kinds of local vendors, food trucks and musical acts. You can find jewelry, books, coffee, car shows, art displays, kids games, homemade soaps, and even the Little Miss Country Days pageant. This year the 1 day event will take place on September 9th, 2017!
This is a fun new addition to Bolivar, MO opening in October of 2015. Their motto is to inspire happy hearts and cheerful faces through sweets, soda and shirts. Creator Designs, a local t-shirt design company, decided to expand their business by opening up Creator Delights and has been serving the Bolivar community (and surrounding areas) for 25 years. They offer Caribou Coffee, Coca-Cola, comfy clothing, copious candy, and even have a drive through.
If you’re from Bolivar, you know that one of the best perks of living there is getting to enjoy the awesome Dunnegan Memorial Park. The park has beautiful paths around a small, quaint lake and is lined with tons of colorful trees and perfect spots to picnic. You can often find people hammocking, feeding the ducks, or bringing their families to hang out here. As a bonus, you can take a drive around the park for the awesome Christmas light show they put on starting after Thanksgiving!
A little hidden gem in Bolivar is the Greater Polk County Farmer’s Market! It’s the place where area locavores can find and buy all their fresh produce, meats, eggs, jams, fresh baked goods, plants and handmade soaps. They open every week on Saturday mornings from 8:00am to noon, rain or shine, at 320 S. Market St (next to the fire station on Springfield Street)!
For thirty years, the Dunnegan Gallery of Art has delighted visitors as a premiere showcase of outstanding western and contemporary art, open to the public and free of charge.The gallery is a non-profit organization set up by the Dunnegan family and features permanent artwork from world renowned artists, as well as special shows throughout the year. They are open every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1:00-4:00pm.
Southwest Baptist University is always putting on fun events whether it’s a great theatre show, an exciting Bearcats football game, or a classic chorale concert, there’s something for everyone in the community on this college campus. SBU’s renowned theatre program has featured shows like Annie Get Your Gun, The Sound of Music, and The Gift of the Magi. Just last year, the Bearcats football team set 28 different school records and alongside that, they captured their first ever conference championship, first ever AFCA National Ranking, and advanced to the NCAA Division II Playoffs for the first time in program history. Brenda’s is a quaint breakfast and lunch stop just off the square in Bolivar. They are a family owned local restaurant serving a variety of breakfast and lunch specialties from eggs, omelets, and pancakes to salads, soups, sandwiches, and more. All of their items are super affordable and delicious. They just moved to a new location, one door down from their previous spot on Broadway Street! Real home-style tastes in the heart of downtown Bolivar.
For all your coffee needs, hit up The Bean 3:16, a fun coffee shop on located on the Bolivar square! They serve Italian based espresso drinks along with lattes, frappes, iced coffee, smoothies, protein shakes, steamers, hot chocolate, pastries and more. The Bean also serves up soups and an array of different sandwiches. They often have concerts and art displays going on throughout the year and are always involved in the Bolivar community.
