20 October Events for People Who Love Halloween

For some folks, Halloween is the best holiday of the year. If you’re the type that gets your costume ready in March, we’ve got some events on the calendar that you need to know about! Some of them are kid friendly, some more geared toward adults. However you celebrate All Hallow’s Eve, there’s something for everyone this year in Springfield!


GHOST TOURS at PYTHIAN CASTLE

When: Every Tuesday and Friday

Where: Pythian Castle

Hear ghostly tales while touring the castle. Tour lasts and hour and half and includes brief history.


MONSTERS OF THE OZARKS

When: October 4, 7-9 p.m.

Where:The Library Center – 4653 S. Campbell Ave.

Local hills have long been filled with lore and legends, and according to some Ozarkers, monsters like Momo, Gowrow and even the Goat Man. Kaitlyn McConnell, founder of Ozarks Alive, talks about these stories that entertained (and scared) locals from days gone by. An “Oh, the Horror!” event, celebrating the horror genre.


THE HAUNTS OF C-STREET 2018

The Haunts of C-Street is a Paranormal Dinner Theater and History Tour of Historic Commercial Street in Springfield, MO. Tickets are $45 per person and include a four course meal, performance and guided walking tour.
Dinner includes salad, bean and quinoa soup, yellow pepper garlic mashed potatoes, grilled chicken with chipotle sauce, and vegetable with Peruvian purple corn pudding for dessert. Vegetarian option is a black bean stuffed pepper in place of chicken. (Both options are gluten free)
Pre-show happy hour begins at 5:30pm, show begins at 6:00pm with the walking tour ending at 9pm. Dates are each Tuesday and Thursday evening in October 2018 with a special Halloween performance on Wednesday October 31, 2018. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Performances are upstairs at Cafe Cusco at 234 East Commercial Street. Must be 18 to participate. Happy Haunting!

MONSTER MASH HARVEST BASH

Come and dance! Costumed or not, you are sure to have a blast at this bash. Dance on one of the best dance floors in Springfield with a warm and welcoming group of people! Open to the public, and newbies are encouraged! Bring a harvest-y Halloween-y snack if you can. Cost is $7 for members and students, $10 for non-members — BUT — if you join the night of the dance, your attendance is FREEE!

MURDER AT MONKS

Not much has been announced about this event yet, but it is at Springfield’s funniest night club, so you can be sure it’ll be a blast!

 


MISSOURI’S MURDEROUS MATRONS

Hear about notorious female murderers in Missouri as part of the Library’s October celebration of the horror genre. The 1928 arrest of Catawissa nurse Bertha Gifford exposed her as a serial killer, believed to be responsible for the deaths of 17 people. Twelve years later, Wentzville farmwife Emma Heppermann was accused of killing two of her husbands by putting arsenic in their potato soup. Further investigation revealed she killed five of her seven husbands. Author Victoria Cosner will unravel the stories behind these unusual Missouri murderesses. Books will be available for sales and signing. An “Oh, the Horror!” event.


FRANKENSTEIN at SPRINGFIELD CONTEMPORARY THEATRE

Springfield Contemporary Theatre presents the area premiere of Frankenstein. But this time, the story is told from the perspective of the grotesque creature. So audiences are given a glimpse into life as a monster and are left pondering the effects of parental neglect and good versus evil. This play is recommended for adults only. More shows are scheduled in November.


PETS & PUMPKINS

OCT 20 – noon to 5 p.m.

The entire square and lead-in streets will be filled with games and activities for everyone in the family, including the fur-kids. Some things planned are a child and pet friendly hay maze, live music, games, food and the one of the biggest costume contests and parades you have ever seen! Over 14 trophies will be awarded to contestants! Categories include: Best Pet/Owner Combo, Most Original, Funniest, Cutest, Scariest, and Judge’s Overall Favorite. Parade line-up starts at 3:15pm on Park Central East next to Civil Kitchen.

The Pets and Pumpkins Festival is a “Rain or Shine” event and the cost is $2.00 each for ALL attendees (adults/kids/pets) With paid admission, attendees are given a wrist or collar band and can take part in ALL the activities at no cost, including the parade/costume contest.

Besides all the fun, one of the BEST things about Pets and Pumpkins is that money raised from the sale of wrist/collar bands is donated to local non-profit children and animal organizations. The event helps support organizations dedicated to saving lives of animals and helping needy children in our community.

The Pets and Pumpkins Festival is October 20, 2018 from 12-5pm on the Downtown Square – Springfield MO.


NIGHT AT THE HAUNTED LIBRARY

OCT 20 – 7:08 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Midtown Carnegie Branch Library  – 397 E. Central St.

Enjoy a spook-tacular night of after-hours fun and games with creepy mazes, a spooky scavenger hunt, scary stories, cupcakes, punch and prizes. Families welcome; all youth must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.


M-DOCK HALLOWEEN PARTY AT KRAVE

M-DOCK will be putting the best Halloween party together tonight on stage. MDock band has been playing great music in the Springfield area for 20 years. Come out and dance to a variety of hits from the 60’s – 90’s at Krave. Doors at 7, Show at 8. $10

The Halloween Hustle is a local race put on by local people with 100% of proceeds benefiting a local charity— Harmony House. The race starts and ends at City Utilities, 301 East Central Street. This relatively flat race route winds through historic mid-town Springfield. Expect no tricks, but lots of treats at the Halloween Hustle—with candy for your little ghosts and goblins on every corner. An event for kids of all ages—runners are encouraged get in the holiday spirit and wear their Halloween costumes.

HAUNTED BUS TOURS

Haunted Bus Tours are back and better than ever! Travel back in time to learn about some of downtown Springfield’s most “haunting” people and their stories. The one-hour tour is narrated by History Museum on the Square staff. See the site of Springfield’s first city cemetery, the location of a mass grave from the Civil War, hear stories about haunted buildings and who the ghosts might be. All this and much more packed into a one-hour ride through downtown on a Fisk bus!

The party begins at Patton Alley Pub at 5:30 pm. Grab a cocktail, then hop on one of the tour buses that leave at 6pm. When you return, have a drink and food, play some trivia and participate in the costume contest.

This is the 10th year the Springfield Symphony Orchestra has offered a free concert perfect for the city’s youngest music lovers. Each year, the symphony plays Halloween classics and spooky tunes, and kids are welcome to wear Halloween costumes to the show. There’s even a costume contest! Pick up tickets at the door the night of the event for first-come first-served seating.
