Let’s admit it, 2020 was less than stellar for a lot of people. But a beacon of light in the abyss of the year called COVID was how many great businesses were still operating or newly opened their doors in 417land! So, let’s take a trip down memory lane and reminisce about all the new great spots we got to enjoy!
322 South Ave, Springfield Mo, 65806
Springfield’s only Pop/punk emo vegan ice cream parlor located at the Outland Complex in downtown SGF. They opened their doors in November serving up their signature black oat milk-based ice cream as well as the classic fruity Dole whip! You can get it in a cup topped with strawberries and cheesecake bites or have it on a cone with hot fudge and sprinkles. They are also serving up hot slices of pizza from another local favorite, The Big Slice! So, grab some ice cream and a piece of pizza and explore all that downtown Springfield has to offer!

When was the last time you found a hidden gem located inside of another local great place in the 417? Secret Sandwich is in the back of the Sweet Boys Bar on South Ave in downtown Springfield. They are cooking up some delicious and unique sandwiches that I guarantee you won’t find anyplace else in Springfield! Grab the Ham and Butter sandwich that is a pile of thin-sliced prosciutto with cultured butter and apricot jam on a Cuban roll that they ship in from Florida. How about the Madre sandwich? House chopped meatballs in a black garlic red sauce topped with creamy provel cheese! With an already great menu, they also have some rotating specials that will surely have you coming back weekly to try their newest creations.

How many times have you had the craving to try a dish you might have seen on tv but don’t have access to unless you hop on a plane and fly to the country of origin? Well if any of those cravings have been for Latin food, then Mundos Latin Kitchen in Ozark has your back! They have dishes from over 10 different Latin countries on their menu. You can order some Tostones which are flattened, and fried plantains topped with beans, Pico de Gallo, sour cream and cotija cheese or maybe you have always wanted to try the Puerto Rican dish Mofongo consisting of mashed plantains, garlic, chicharrones and then piled high with shrimp and a creamy cheese sauce! So, head to Ozark next time you are in the mood for some Latin cuisine!

Jum’s African Market is your one-stop-shop for imported African goods. They carry affordable clothing, accessories along with a nice selection of food! A great thing about having an African market in Springfield is that it also brings a new local food truck called, Desire Springfield! They are making traditional African dishes and cuisine that you can order or pick up at the Jums market or have catered for special occasions. You can get eba and okra soup which originates from Nigeria or even Jollof rice with veggies and chicken. There is always a new place for us to branch out and try right here in Southwest Mo!

The once well-known food trailer located in Battlefield, Mo opened it’s brick and mortar doors in downtown Springfield in 2020. Located on Walnut street, Billy Neck is offering a plethora of sandwiches with every combination of toppings you can imagine. They also have quesadillas, knowns as a “Billydilla” with 40+ different flavors to choose from! You can also grab a bowl of BillyMac, their macaroni and cheese that you can top with bacon and jalapenos. If you are a fan of options when it comes to your meal, then BillyNeck is your place!

Well, you are in luck because What’s Alfredo is Springfield’s newest in-home private Italian personal chef! Lorenzo and Kaylee Antignano will customize a fully authentic Italian meal for you and your family or even cater your special event. They get the freshest ingredients from local establishments, like seafood from Express Foods and cut to order beef from American Meat Company, all located in the 417. So, if you are craving squid ink linguine and shrimp, gnocchi with pesto or even a New York strip with candied carrots, What’s Alfredo has you covered.

SushiFork is Springfield’s newest create your own sushi restaurant coming in 2021. They are offering traditional and some not so traditional options when it comes to getting your sushi fix. Taking over the old Pie Five location on Battlefield Road just past National Ave. You will soon be able to create your own sushi rolls and sushi burritos wrapped in a roasted seaweed roll or a soy wrap made with 100% soybeans! Don’t feel like creating your own roll, no problem. Sushifork also has a menu of rolls with pre-determined fillings and toppings so you don’t have to choose! Get ready Springfield, because your sushi options are about to grow!

Having options when it comes to dietary restrictions or a specific dietary lifestyle is a must for restaurants nowadays. But even with restaurants having a handful of options when it comes to vegan choices, it’s still limited. Que Mulberry Vegan in Springfield and their wonderful vegan and gluten-free menu! They are an online-only (link to website on their Facebook), catering, delivery and free pick up takeout restaurant. You can get a vegan and gluten-free spinach and roasted tomato quiche or one of their many vegan desserts such as chocolate chip muffins or vegan pumpkin vanilla spice cake. You can also grab a vegan breakfast kit, stuffed dates or even some Greek Dolmades from their online store. Next time you are looking for those vegan options, don’t forget about Mulberry Vegan!

Seymour’s new kid on the block is bringing gourmet coffee and family tradition to everyone. Old Depot Coffee is serving an array of hot and iced coffee along with cinnamon rolls and their famous Wilma Bread. Wilma Bread, named after co-owner Andrew Peters’ great grandmother, is a family tradition of fried dough that is then dusted with powdered sugar! So, go in, grab an iced latte or cappuccino and some tasty pastries and enjoy all that Old Depot has to offer!
Farmers Market of the Ozarks at Farmers Park
Saturdays at Farmers’ Park in Springfield is always flowing with people coming to the farmers market for all their fresh veggies and specialty items. Among the tents selling tomatoes, fresh baked bread and honey are an array of food trucks and trailers selling delicious food and drinks. One of the newest additions to this “buffet line” of trucks is Abby’s Acai Company! Abby is making Acai bowls topped with bananas, blueberries and strawberries, coconut, granola, chia seeds, agave or honey. Want to change it up a bit? Grab the newest creation, the Maple Bowl that now has maple pecan granola and maple syrup drizzled on top!

In the summertime it’s always nice to cool off with some fruity flavored sno cones, in the winter months we warm up with hot beverages and for 365 days a year we crave donuts! Sno Nut is a food trailer that is serving up all our seasonal favorites at one location. In the summer you can get shaved ice, in the fall and winter grab that cup of hot coco or apple cider and you can get delicious mini donuts served all year long! They are making gourmet burgers using wagyu beef topped with some even tastier toppings. Grab the H.A.F.B burger that is covered in sriracha mayo, microgreens, smoked gouda, bacon, avocado butter and a soft fried egg! Or maybe you like to get some appetizers, then the huge Bavarian pretzel or their award-winning chicken wings! Either way, they will have you shouting Burgers, pretzels and wings, oh my!
