My Dream House is Amazing: A Gen Z Interview by Murney Associates

When buyers are looking for their dream homes, agents are constantly challenged by different opinions of family members as to what features are most important. In some situations, a wife leads the house search while in other cases, a husband is the primary decision-maker. However, in many household purchases, children are important influencers of the final decision.

Gen Z Influences Household Buying Decisions the Most

In 2021, a Forbes survey stated 93% of parents reported their Gen Z kids (digital natives born between 1997-2012) influence most household family decisions. With Gen Z making up over 20% of the US population, that's a lot of influence and potential buying power.

Without question, we can learn a lot from kids. They represent a fast-paced, growing market with spending power second to none. In 2022, “Gen Z has now generated a combined pocketbook punch of $150 billion annually” (Forbes)

All you need to do is ask them. We went directly to the source—a bright, eager, creative nine-year-old named Lakin. Our question? Have they ever thought about what their dream homes will look like…

Murney Associates (MA): Lakin, can you tell me what your dream home will look like?

Lakin: My dream home will be AMAZING! It will be in a city neighborhood with lots of nice people. It will have an alarm when any mean neighbors come close.
My dream home will be brick on the outside, with two front steps leading to a covered porch with a swing and a hammock chair. My house will have a main floor and a basement, six bedrooms for me and my five kids, three bathrooms with HUGE showers and bathtubs, and a kennel for my two dogs (one puppy and one older dog—both Boston Terriers). It will have an electric fireplace with a brick seat. It will also have a chef’s kitchen with three huge refrigerators, a place to store knives, a big gas stove, a wood-fire oven for pizzas, an electric oven and lots of skillets and kettles.
My dream home will have a theater room in the basement with a HUGE TV that takes up the WHOLE wall and a lot of comfy seats. There will be a popcorn machine and a cotton candy machine. I will get to the basement with a slip-and-slide and climb up a rope to get back to the main floor. Oh! And there will be an elevator in case any elderly people come that don’t want to climb the rope.
The yard will be three acres with a white fence around the back. There will be a pool and a hot tub in the backyard, along with apple trees, a huge strawberry patch, blueberry bushes and a private pumpkin patch.

MA: When will you buy your dream home?

Lakin: I will buy my dream home in 11 years when I’m 20 years old. But my mom isn’t ready to talk about that.

MA: How will you pay for your dream home, and how much will it cost?

Lakin: I will buy my dream home using my own money that I’ll earn from my waiter job. I will probably have to save up for a year or two, since it is my dream home. It will probably cost around $50 grand. That sounds about right, don’t you think?

It sounds like the future is in pretty good hands—with just a little time (and economics classes). Remember, it’s never too early to start looking for your dream home with Murney Associates, Realtors. We understand you’ve been thinking about it for a long time.
