Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

Leaves turning color…
Days getting shorter…
Misty mornings…
…And a chill in the air are all signs Autumn is headed into the Ozarks.

It’s time to start prepping your home for the season. Here are our tips to get ready:

Indoor

  • Weather Stripping keeps moisture and cold air out while keeping warm air in. Check for damaged weather stripping and make repairs as necessary.
  • Caulk cracks and gaps around your windows.
  • Replace filters—furnace, dryer, air conditioner, stove, and water.
  • Dust your fans.
  • A furnace checkup is a great idea before it gets cold enough to need it.

Outdoor

  • Check your roof for damage. Fixing small problems in the fall can prevent winter weather from making something minor a major problem come spring.
  • Clean your gutters.
  • Clean up lawn equipment, removing dirt and debris.
  • Drain and put away watering hoses.

Planting in the Fall

Late September and October are the perfect time to start planting new shrubs, trees, and perennials. Plant at least four to six weeks before the ground freezes so your new plants can start to establish their roots while the ground is still warm. Keep your new plants watered until the temps regularly drop below 40°.

If you want spring blooms, try planting these bulbs this fall:

  • Tulips
  • Daffodils
  • Hyacinths
  • Alliums
  • Crocuses

Check out this Better Homes & Gardens article for more information on planting new bulbs.
