Murney: What’s your Design background?

5908: 20 years ago I bought a store called London Crest Interiors.  My daughter Julie worked there and I loved it.  We kept it open for about 10 years.

Murney: What was the moment you decided to open 5908?

5908: We had gone to market to buy accessories for our house and I just saw so many different things in a new contemporary style.  I  got really excited about the direction I was seeing in these designs.  We got the opportunity to start a store in Farmer’s Park.  My two daughters, Julie and Shannon, were able to work with me.  We opened on September 15, 2015 and the rest is history.

Murney: What does 5908 mean?

5908: Those are the street numbers of my home.  Designing my own home inspired me when I was starting the business.  Plus, it has a nice ring to it.

“Designing my own home inspired me when I was starting the business.”

Murney: How would you classify your style?

5908: Earthy contemporary with a mixture of styles.  I try to pick things that would work in lots of different spaces and styles.

Murney: Do you offer design services?

5908: Yes. We don’t do wallpaper or drapes, but we do custom placement for our furniture.  We do custom ordering as well.  We gather up accessories and go to client’s homes and go and help them arrange things in the most appealing way possible.

“Start with something you really love.”

Murney: What are your suggestions for designing small spaces?

5908: Start with something you really love, whether it’s a rug or picture and build off of that.  It’s a layering process.  Neutral upholstery is a current trend for small spaces.  You can add color in later to compliment it.

Murney: What’s one accessory everyone should have in their home?

5908: Anything cowhide-covered. A Cow-hide covered rug.

Murney: What’s one piece of advice you’d offer to anyone who is decorating a new home?

5908: If you’re unsure of what to do, get professional help.  If you’re worried about cost, you’ll love your home a lot more if it’s done by a pro.  Figure up your budget first and then contact a professional.  If you walk into a room and love it, it’ll be worth it.

Murney: What’s your favorite piece of furniture right now?

5908: Solid block wood chairs right now, but it changes every time I go to the market.

Murney: Where do you shop for your inventory?

5908: I get most of my inventory from Highpoint, North Carolina, which is largest home furnishings market in the world. There are millions of square feet of furniture.  I also go to markets in Atlanta and Dallas to find new items.

Murney: What’s your favorite book or magazine on design?

5908: Anything by Kelly Wearstler.  She’s a designer in California.  She does a lot of hotel interiors and large-scale projects.
